There's a particular kind of ear that stops you mid-scroll. Not the single-diamond-stud kind, and not the maximalist everything-everywhere kind either, but the one that looks effortless and finished at the same time - as though it simply arrived that way.

Zone One: The First Lobe
The move: Funky hoops.
Why it works: Hoops give the base of the ear width and a sense of weight, and that in turn gives everything above them something to build on. Think of it as the foundation of the whole arrangement: not the piece anyone comments on, but the reason the rest holds together.

Why it works: Repetition is the single thing separating a curated ear from an accumulated one. Three rings in a row read as one continuous line travelling up the ear.
A sizing note: Step down in diameter as you go. The lobe narrows towards the top, and a ring that sits beautifully in your second hole will look oversized by your fourth.

Zone Three: The Tragus and Conch
The move: One small stone, flat to the ear.
Here's the zone everybody overdoes. You've gone to the trouble of getting the piercing, so naturally you want to put something worth looking at in it. She goes in the opposite direction entirely: one round stone in the tragus, another in the conch. The simplicity is what makes it look expensive.
Why it works: These are the connective tissue of the stack. Their entire job is to close the gap between the lobe and the helix so there's no dead space in the middle of the ear, and the moment you put something with a personality in there, it starts competing with the hoops below.

Zone Four: The Helix
The move: The dangle.
If you take one thing from this entire ear, make it this.
Why it works: It relocates all of the movement to the top of the ear, adds interest and the look of someone who's spent serious money on a piece.

Lobes only? Still entirely doable
Zones three and four call for cartilage piercings, tragus, conch and helix. If lobes are all you've got, zones one and two are still completely available to you: hoops in the first hole, clickers climbing above them.
Bar length isn't stone size
When a flatback is listed at 6mm or 8mm, that's the distance the post travels through your ear - not the size of the stone on the front. 6mm suits most lobes, while 8mm is usually the safer choice for cartilage. If you're genuinely torn, your piercer will be able to tell you in seconds.
You can sleep and swim in all of it
